Compensation Works founder and principal Catherine Dovey, CCP, SPHR, has worked in human resources for more than 20 years. Compensation and pay systems are her primary specialty. Depending on client need, Catherine will partner with other experts for specific projects.
Catherine has designed and managed base pay plans, incentive plans, performance management systems and job evaluation systems. Her extensive experience includes union and non-union environments in private companies and nonprofit and public-sector organizations.

Credentials include a Master’s of Business Administration from Washington State University, Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) through WorldatWork (formerly the American Compensation Association) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) through the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI)
Catherine has served on numerous local, regional and national HR boards. Her positions have included

- Past president and board member for the Northwest Human Resources Management Association (NHRMA)
- Board member for the Washington State Council for SHRM
- Western Region Item Writing Panel member for Human Resources Certification Institute

- Founding board member for the Southwest Washington HR Association of SHRM
Area HR organizations have recognized Catherine with the Distinguished Award recipient for NHRMA and the Member of the Year for the Lake Washington Human Resource Association. Catherine also teaches and frequently presents on compensation and HR topics
About Stan Shimizu
Stan has more than 15 years experience in human resources and compensation. He has special depth in compensation and implementation of those programs, performance management systems, communication strategies, HR infrastructure development and process improvement systems, recruitment and retention and policy development. He developed his HR and consulting skills by holding leadership positions with companies like Nordstrom, Nike, Amazon.com and Washington Mutual. Such diversity with regard to industry, size, and growth, has provided Stan with a valuable perspective in helping clients.
Stan is a skilled team facilitator and has guided many small and large group efforts on various themes including compensation, performance management, leadership development, coaching/mentoring, team development, as well as legal compliance. Stan focuses on program and process improvement initiatives—helping organizations to streamline and integrate existing processes saving them both time and money in the long-term. Stan has worked with private, public and non-profit entities. Stan is an expert at balancing what is necessary with what is most practical given their unique business situations. Accustomed to rolling up his sleeves, Stan is comfortable handling the tactical details without losing sight of the big picture for his clients.
Stan received a Bachelor of Arts in International Business Administration, with a concentration in Communications, from the University of Puget Sound.
About Sarah Wille
Compensation Works Sr. Analyst Sarah Wille, SPHR has more than ten years of experience in the human resources profession, including work in industries such as life sciences, health and wellness, and corporate travel. Most recently, she served as the Human Resources Manager for Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, which grew from 100 employees to nearly 300 during her tenure. Sarah also held various roles of increasing responsibility in HR at Columbia Athletic Clubs and Expedia Travel.
Sarah’s passion and expertise are in working with business leaders to design and implement effective HR systems in alignment with company goals. She has worked with small and mid-sized companies through periods of rapid growth as well as layoffs and acquisitions. Sarah is skilled both as a strategic business partner to company executives and as a trusted employee advocate. She has special depth in compensation, benefits, and HRIS systems experience. Sarah works effectively behind the scenes and with management to provide employees, customers, and shareholders with better value for investment in people by aligning HR best practives with corporate strategy, vision, and mission.
Sarah is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources. She is a graduate of University of Washington with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology.
About Shannon Drohman
Shannon has over 15 years experience in human resources, with an emphasis in compensation. She managed total rewards programs, including such elements as base pay, short- and long-term incentive pay, executive compensation, profit sharing, deferred compensation and benefits. In addition to compensation, Shannon is skilled in multiple areas of human resources such as strategic planning, policy/procedure development, performance management, retirement plans, full-cycle recruiting, and employee relations. Her past employment includes working for small to mid-sized, private and public companies, most recently as the Compensation & Benefits Manager at HomeStreet Bank.
With an extensive background in project management and collaboration, Shannon is well suited to the consulting role. She lead projects related to incentive plan design, salary structure development, mergers & acquisitions, HRIS conversions, and HR process improvement among others.
Having always had an interest in education, Shannon taught numerous undergraduate and graduate level courses in the human resources content area. She also facilitated SPHR and PHR preparatory classes.
Shannon is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Western Washington University and a Master of Science in Human Resources from Chapman University.
About Kathy Marek
Kathy Marek, PHR, CCP has more than 15 years of experience in human resources. Her experience with a broad range of organizations from commercial fishing to insurance gives her a unique ability to effectively work in a variety of company cultures. Her latest position was as a Human Resources Consultant with PEMCO Mutual Insurance Company. There she worked with management from an alliance of companies in industries that included Banking, Credit Card Processing and Information Technology.
Her professional knowledge base in Human Resources includes employment, compensation, benefits, legal review, employee relations, FLSA analysis and regulatory reporting. She has a proven ability to serve as a strong resource in all areas of compensation including market benchmark, communication, performance management, incentive plan review, program roll-out and program training facilitation. Her ability and desire to gain an understanding of an organization makes her an effective partner, who can communicate at all levels of an organization.
Kathy is a certified Professional in Human Resources and a certified Compensation Professional. She is a graduate of Western Washington University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business/Marketing.
